Board Report

The final regular meeting of the 2008-2009 Board opened with a prayer by Pam. Church Financial and Rental status seems to be on an even keel thanks to many faithful friends and careful regard for expenses. Some new ideas for our investment policy will be investigated.

What’s the latest on roof repair? The estimate for taking the furnaces off areas to be re-roofed and put back after roofing is completed is unexpectedly high -over $9,000. As we expected the approximate cost of this to be about $5,000, we are getting two more bids before making a final decision.

Are we a welcoming place? In an effort to start on the project of brightening our front entrance, the board agreed to removing the current panels of art glass beside the narthex main entrance door and replace with clear glass. We will retain what we can salvage of the colored art glass to use decoratively elsewhere. The board expects that this will let more light in, improve the indoor/outdoor feel of the Narthex, increase security due to the stronger glass, and ease color choices in possible flooring and wall changes.

An exciting new movement of the Spirit is evident in explorations by Arn Mutia to develop a church for Filipino-Americans in the SF Bay area. Glowing reports of his work with the Filipino church efforts locally and in Richmond, Virginia and the yearning of local religious Filipinos for a progressive church for Filipinos however are balanced by the requirement for Arn and his family to go back to the Philippines if he cannot get his visa extended this summer. The Board agreed to continue the conversation. Our church would be in relationship with such a church via a working group.

The board was happy to invite the MOC task force to organize a forum (s) on national health care reform.

The church rolls will be reviewed in the next few weeks by a committee of pastor, clerk, treasurer, and three church members. Their report about inactive members will be brought to the board for decision.

Pastor’s Report: Pam invited board members to attend a meeting of members from several southern Marin congregations to discuss common issues. Wednesday, June 2, 2009, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The Closing Prayer was offered by Dora at 9:30p.m.

General Synod News

"Immerse Yourself" is the theme for General Synod 27, this weekend, June 26-30, in Grand Rapids. The UCC's communication team will cover General Synod with an array of traditional resources and new technologies. For those attending the event, the time-honored printed daily wrap-up edition of UCNews will be available each morning at the Convention Center. What's new for attendees, and those following General Synod from afar, is the many new technologies being deployed to offer more complete and real-time coverage. UCNews online site will be dedicated to General Synod coverage, with articles appearing as quickly as they can be filed and posted by the staff of 6 reporters, 3 photographers and 2 videographers, along with a crew of web and editing teams. News story headlines will be fed to the UCNews Twitter feed - giving notice of new stories and event updates as they happen. These messages contain links to stories as they appear in UCNews online. Keeping You e-Posted (KYeP) will offer a daily edition dedicated to General Synod news and events, with an exciting mix of stories, video links, personality profiles and blog links. As at the previous two Synods, a live internet video-cast of plenary hall sessions, major speeches and worship services will be available online. The presence of "social media" will be strong at General Synod 27. Unlike traditional forms of reporting, where news creation and delivery is controlled by a small group, the communications team is encouraging everyone to participate in the information process. MyUCCblogs will also post stories and reflections of participants.

Three Adult Camps

When we think of camp, we usually think of the youth that benefit from summer and winter camp programs. Adults can benefit from dedicated time away in the outdoors as well! There are three adult opportunities offered by the Northern California Nevada Conference, United Church of Christ as the end of the summer—all weekend events at Camp Cazadero in Sonoma County.

Young Adult Retreat, August 7-9: For young adults, ages 18-25. Particularly designed for young adults in this transitional time of life, this event will offer chances to connect with other young adults, reflect on life at this crossroads, and relax away from work and school responsibilities. Ad to that the usual fun at camp—swimming, firebowl, etc. and it will be a great weekend! Cost $120.

Adult Spiritual Retreat, August 21-23: For any adult 18 and over. This weekend will offer a program designed to facilitate exploration of spiritual practices for everyday life. An opportunity to explore spirituality and enjoy the best of what camp has to offer. Activities include worship, workshops, swimming, firebowl, and more. Parents of young children are welcome to bring them for a reduced fee. (No children’s program will be provided.) Cost: $120.

Cazadero Service Retreat, September 18-20: For any adult 18 and over. Service is the theme of this weekend and it will be built into the program. Work projects around the camp will benefit from hands-on help. This is a perfect mission opportunity for congregational groups (ministry teams, men’s groups, etc.) Time will be set aside for groups to meet together for their own planning purposes as well as to participate in mission through service at Caz. Cost: $50.
