The Community Church of Mill Valley An Open and Affirming Congregation Tue, 19 Aug 2014 00:20:32 +0000 en-US hourly 1 You Don’t Have to Be A Member to Sell at the Garage Sale Tue, 19 Aug 2014 00:20:32 +0000 Come and Sell—Order a Table or Two Today

Come to Buy—New Earlier Time is 9 to 1

CCMV’s 2nd annual “garage sale” is two weeks away. On Monday, September 1, from 9 to 1, we expect to have lots of buyers and browsers strolling through the front patio looking for trinkets and treasures among our attractive, lightly-used wares.

If you are a neighbor or Mill Valley resident, you are welcome to participate.  (A $25 refundable deposit is required from non-members to insure the reserved spot is used.)  Plan to bring your items to the church on September 1, between 8 and 8:30 a.m. (The loading zone will be open for your convenience, but plan to re-park your car elsewhere once you finish unloading.) Find the reserved table(s) with your name on it and set out your wares. Each family handles their own pricing and sales. The church will advertise the event in local media and on Craigslist.

10 percent of all sales will be donated to CCMV. (Last year some sellers donated all of their sales’ proceeds to the church, but that’s strictly optional.)

To reserve a spot, complete the Garage Sale Reservation Form.  Have questions?  Call Linda, 383-1929.  Mail your Form and $25 Reservation Fee to Community Church, 8 Olive Street, Mill Valley CA  94941.

August Guest Preachers Fri, 15 Aug 2014 21:04:23 +0000 August 17

Rev. Susan Meeter has recently retired after a long term pastorate in the East Bay. A creative person, not yet ready for full retirement, she is thinking about where and what God might be calling next. She is active on the Northern California Nevada Conference of the UCC and one of her current projects is helping plan the annual retreat for authorized ministers.

August 24 and 31

Pepper Swanson graduated from the Pacific School of Religion this past May and is currently seeking a call in parish ministry. She comes very highly recommended by the San Carlos UCC where she has been serving part time.

Come to the Labor Day Community “Garage Sale” Tue, 05 Aug 2014 21:12:36 +0000 Get ready for the Second Annual Community “Garage Sale” on Labor Day (Monday, September 1, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.) at the Community Church of Mill Valley. Last year the sale raised about $450 for the church. We’re hoping, with your help, to achieve similar results this year.

The idea is to bring together all your excess “stuff”— the useful but no longer used items that clutter all garages—and put them up for sale in the church patio.  Think of all the wonderful items you can resell (tools, small appliances, furniture, books, clothing, toys, artifacts or knick-knacks).  Bring them to the church.

When buyers come to snap up these “treasures,” 10 percent of all sales will be donated to the church. (Last year some sellers donated all of their sales’ proceeds, but that’s strictly optional.)

If you or any of your neighbors would like to participate as sellers, you are welcome to sign-up for a sales table, so spread the word. The Labor Day sale will also be posted on Craigslist and in local media.

If you would like to reserve a table ($25) please email the church office at at  Your $25 can be applied to the 10% donation to the church.

Interim Minister Expected by Early September Mon, 04 Aug 2014 21:08:42 +0000 A position statement has been developed by the Interim Committee, approved by the Board and circulated to the conference and ministers who had expressed an interest in serving at CCMV. It is exciting that so many are interested in our little church.   We have very high standards but are confident we will find a person able to meet them.

We have received a number of profiles (ministerial statements/resumes) from qualified candidates and have begun interviews. We will be checking references and probably be listening to people preaching. Naturally confidentiality of who candidates are needs to be maintained at this time.

Once a person is chosen they will be presented to the board and a contract negotiated. We continue to expect to have an interim minister with us by early September.

Interim Search Committee Convener

Summer Guest Preachers Mon, 04 Aug 2014 21:04:24 +0000 July 20 Evelyn Vigil, the chaplain at the Main Jail in Santa Clara County, will be with us again. Her strong faith and belief in human potential always make her a great speaker. And then there is her wonderful sense of humor and laugh!

July 27 James Meriam, a student at Pacific School of Religion, will be with us. James is a Vermonter with Congregational roots – his father is a Congregational pastor. He has recently served as intern at First Congregational Church in Oakland and comes with great reviews. He is reportedly “very Vermont”.

August 3 and August 10 Nancy McKay will be with us again. If you were at church the Sunday Dora’s retirement was recognized you will remember her as the person who gave the congregation their charge for going forward in a new way. Nancy is a retired UCC pastor, spiritual director and author. She loves gardening and music and is sure to bring a warm and loving message.

August 17 Susan Meeter, a very recently retired UCC pastor who has most recently been serving Mira Vista UCC in El Cerrito. Susan is an art loving person, a long time parish minister, has served the Northern California Nevada Conference in many capacities, and is in the process of discerning where God calls her to serve next.

Blessings and Farewell to Pastor Pam Sat, 21 Jun 2014 00:27:17 +0000 On Sunday June 8 we celebrated Pentecost, the birthday of the Christian community. That same day Rev. Pam Shortridge’s tenure as our pastor and teacher drew to a close. We said good-bye with both love and sadness after 23 years of her leadership.

On June 8 we honored our work together and promised to let go of one another and begin anew. Each of us will look forward to new ways of serving, those of us here at Community Church of Mill Valley and Pam as a member in a church near her new home. Wherever we are may the Spirit continue to support and guide us as we respond to Jesus’ challenge: “Follow me.”

Pam’s prayer for you:  “May God bless you and keep you always.”
