Since 1925, five generations have worshiped at the Community Church. Some of us live in Mill Valley and others come from as far away as Santa Rosa and San Francisco. We are individuals of all ages who respect and welcome all people. Relying on both faith and intellect, we gather to share our ideas and draw strength from each other. We work hard at building community both in the church and in the wider world.
Parties and Fundraisers
The church has parties, special lunches, and informal dinners throughout the year. In addition, we plan one large fundraiser—a themed dinner with wine and all the trimmings or an auction of collectible treasures—each year. In December 2012, we hosted our first “Photos with Santa” day, providing local families hot chocolate and homemade cookies as well as a visit with Santa.
Memorial Day Parade
On Memorial Day, 2012, we marched for the first time in Mill Valley’s annual parade—using the opportunity to tell Mill Valley newcomers about our church’s 85 years of social activism. Flanked by rock bands and civic groups, we carried colorful signs about our projects for civil rights, affordable housing, immigration, gay marriage, and the founding of The Redwoods retirement center. All along the parade route, we were greeted with applause and “thumbs up” gestures. The experience proved to be so much fun, we vowed to do it again.
Christian Life Team
The Christian Life Team works closely with the pastor to plan worship services and other events at the church. The group oversees the music program, education, seasonal decoration of the church, and childcare. Throughout the year the team consults with the pastor on themes and the specific scriptural focus for worship services and other events such as the adult faith retreat. The group is always open to new members.
Everyone who loves to sing is welcome to join the choir. Under the expert direction of Esther Archer, the choir rehearses each Sunday at 8:30 a.m. and for an additional hour, after coffee and conversation, twice a month. (The choir takes a vacation break during the summer.) To join the choir all you have to do is tell Music Director Esther Archer that you are interested and then come to rehearsal. At Christmas and at Easter, singers may join a special choir with one-hour rehearsals after worship each Sunday for six weeks.
Men’s Lunch Bunch
The men of the church gather for a relaxed, no-agenda, just-for-fun lunch on the second Wednesday of each month. The guys usually meet at 11:30 a.m. at a local restaurant. Newcomers are always welcome to join them. Contact Muncie for this month’s location.
HOUSING AND SERVICES FOR SENIORS
Fifth Sunday Worship at The Redwoods
A group of volunteers leads worship for residents who are in the Health Care Center at The Redwoods at 1:15 p.m. every month that has a fifth Sunday.
The Redwoods, A Community of Seniors
Originally known as the Community Church Retirement Center, The Redwoods is a non-denominational, not-for-profit organization founded and sponsored by the Community Church of Mill Valley in 1972. This congregation worked diligently for three years to fulfill the dream of creating a non-profit, affordable residence for older adults of moderate means. Today, a cooperative and supportive relationship between The Redwoods and our church continues through volunteers who serve the residents in a variety of ways. Two church members serve on The Redwoods Board of Directors and many church members now make their home there.
Minister in Covenant
Jacquie Hoffman is our minister in covenant who serves as the Property Supervisor for seniors with limited incomes through Mercy Housing in the San Francisco Region. Jacquie’s work ranges from developing new subsidized housing to offering pastoral counseling to administration.
